History and Development of JENOPTIK AG

The roots of today's JENOPTIK AG date back to the year 1846, when Carl Zeiss, one of the pioneer of the optical industry in Germay established an optical workshop in Jena. A big step in the history of the company-named after his founder Carl Zeiss-was the beginning of the cooperation with Ernst Abbe. He was a professor of physics at the University of Jena. During the first two decades of the twentieth, Carl Zeiss grow rapidly and became one of the world's famous manufactures of optical and mechanical solutions for industry, science, medicine and the military. The most famous products of Carl Zeiss are measuring instruments, photo cameras, lenses, binoculars as well as astronomical and medical instruments.

After the World War II in 1948, the company was nationalized and renamed in "VEB Carl Zeiss Jena".

In 1990, the company "VEB Carl Zeiss Jena" was transformed into "JENOPTIK Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH". At this time, 30 000 people were still employed by this company. 1991, the company was split into Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH and JENOPTIK GmbH.

Legal successor of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena

In 1994, JENOPTIK develops into a global player for clean room systems and photonics.
In 1996, JENOPTIK transforms into a joint stock corporation.
In 1998, JENOPTIK shares are listed for the first time on the official market on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
JENOPTIK Automation, the owner of JENOPTIK Laser Technologies was always a part of the former Carl Zeiss and later of JENOPTIK AG. The main business fields are laser machines and production automation.

In 2001 JENOPTIK Laser Technologies USA Corporation in Brighton Michigan was founded to better serve the North American customers. The main JLT business is technology development, service maintenance and sale of spare parts.
